The Shenzhen Escape! [04 May 2007|10:07am]
[ mood | amused ]

For our heroine to use her superpower of MAKING ALL MEN DO HER BIDDING, she must have perfectly manicured fingernails. Of course, this HAD to be done at 11pm at the Queen Spa & Dining. So! Being the good-natured and easy-going sidekick that I am... I let her. I'm too kind =P

The Barbertmobile was being upgraded, so we had to jump into a cab. Time: 11:48pm. The taxi zoomed to the KCR... running over innocent grannies and kittens along the way... but despite our efforts, there was still evil traffic towards the end. In fact, there was a HUGE line of cabs in that tunnel to the metro, so we leapt out and started sprinting. Being a superheroine, she actually expected to be able to do this in heels, but I reasonably pointed out that would be absolutely insane. To my surprise, she listened! I admit, the half a minute or so -that- miracle took in to sink in may have cost us, but I was still ahead of her =)

No such luck graced me when we got to the indoor tunnel of the metro, though, since I, once again, pointed out that she'd probably run faster bare-foot instead of in flipflops. She said something about the possibility of hurting her foot on some rocks or whatever... tch! We had a border crossing to catch!

In spite of all our efforts... in spite of all the pain... we got there two minutes late. There were a few people who were banging on the gate, but the guards were very unsympathetic to our cause. Late is late! No ifs, buts, or whatever.

Finally, we took a cab to the other crossing... and took a Wanchai bus (HK$50). Quite the adventure! But rather tiring. Not recommended for a weeknight. We considered staying in Shenzhen overnight, but... eh... I'd rather be home, y'know?

Motivation Posters [27 Feb 2007|01:33am]
[ mood | cheerful ]
[ music | Gwen Stefani - Crash ]

I've moved into my new apartment for four months, but I haven't really gotten around to unpacking everything yet. I was sorting through the CDs lying around my house and stumbled across some Marvel Motivation Posters that I'd put together as a wallpaper when I was working at Time Warner.

Then I found this: http://www.baddaystudio.com/motivation.html

Sportsmanship, Crush the Enemy and Teamwork crack me up

I also want to get stuff from http://despair.com/indem.html and put them in the office =) So many gems there...

Love Languages Quiz [21 Jan 2007|07:05pm]
[ mood | amused ]
[ music | A Night At The Roxbury - Haddaway - What Is Love (Refreshmento Extro Radio Mix) ]

The Five Love Languages

My primary love language is probably
Quality Time
with a secondary love language being
Physical Touch.

Complete set of results

Quality Time: 11
Physical Touch: 7
Words of Affirmation: 6
Receiving Gifts: 4
Acts of Service: 2

Information

Unhappiness in relationships, according to Dr. Gary Chapman, is often due to the fact that we speak different love languages. Sometimes we don't understand our partner's requirements, or even our own. We all have a "love tank" that needs to be filled in order for us to express love to others, but there are different means by which our tank can be filled, and there are different ways that we can express love to others.

Cheuk's engaged to Madeline! [13 Dec 2006|04:32pm]
[ mood | shocked ]

Wow. I'm not surprised that it happened, but I didn't expect it while they're in a long-distance relationship. One of my best friends from high school, Cheuk, is working as a Management Trainee in Thailand, and his girlfriend of 7-8 years is in Hong Kong. Huh!

All in all, it's good news. Just... dang. So many people are tying the knot.

Jokers wild! (STAR Christmas Party gallery) [13 Dec 2006|03:00pm]
[ mood | chipper ]

On Friday, December 8th, 2006, our company had its Christmas party. Sure, it's a little early, but when you consider the fact that most of upper management taking the last two weeks of the month off... it's not unreasonable to have it early when everyone can make it.

I was actually surprised that my suggestion of Batman villains actually went through, but that's probably due to my excellent negotiation and persuasion skills. After all, I -do- work in PR. Heh. While I was really quite interested in the Two-Face look, the place we were renting costumes from already had a Two-Face (ugly as sin, but still... it was there), and while I'd already planned on having mine custom-made, I'd still be a face in a crowd. So I went with something edgy. Something wild. The Clown Prince of Crime... THE JOKER!

Joker!Joker: It's me, suger bums.
Grisim: Oh, oh Jack, thank god, I'd heard you'd been....
Joker: FRIED, is that what you heard? You set me up over a woman, a WOMAN! You must be insane... don't bother.
Grisim: Your life won't be worth spit!
Joker: I've been dead once already, its very liberating, you should think of it as, therapy.
Grisim: Jack, listen, maybe we can cut a deal.
Joker: Jack? Jack is dead my friend, you can call me Joker. And as you can see, I'm a lot happier.

Needless to say, I was a hit at the party. Most of my friends didn't recognise me... sometimes I'd put my arm around their shoulder, grin at them, and watch them do double-takes as they try figure out who the touchy-feely stranger is. Then the inevitable burst of laughter as it all clicks into place. Fun! It made the three hours of prep-work all worth it... and the US$100 cost of making the outfit.

Take a look at the gallery here.

I stepped away from the 'classic' look, I suppose... with the bright yellow gold shirt and the checkered pants, but I think I was quite faithful to the look from 1989 Batman movie. The girl in picture 1 is my make-up artist, Debby... Mr. Incredible in picture 4 is our Vice President of Creative... most of the rest are my colleagues in Publicity and Marketing. You can see the Two-Face look we rented, as well as a lot of Riddlers and Catwomen.

All in all, the party was loads of fun! I didn't eat much (didn't want to ruin my make-up), but I drank plenty, took a lot of photos (even though I don't think most people will recognise me without the make-up!), and generally had a ball. It's too bad you guys can't see the whole outfit, complete with the two tails at the back, but... maybe Halloween!

STAR Christmas Party [27 Nov 2006|03:44pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]

The theme for our company's Christmas party is going to be HEROES & VILLAINS.

We're going to check out the costume shops, but I don't think there's going to be anything good. Some ideas that have been bandied around have been the (movie) X-Men, (in)famous world leaders (like Bush, Hitler, etc.), Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, blah blah blah...

An idea that I've thrown out is Batman Villains. Heroes are boring... and there are going to be so many different versions of the REALLY mainstream superheroes. I think I could make a good Joker or Two-Face. Oh, oh, how about Scarecrow? This year might actually be fun. It'd be a pleasant change from having to dress up in drag...

So, can I pull this together in 10 days?

Joker - Purple suit, bright (orange, yellow?) shirt, a contrasting (bow?) tie, a green wig and white make-up. Voila!
Two-Face - It'll have to be a custom-made suit and tie... the make-up will be relatively easy, but what stumps me is the hair. Dye? Just a different way to gel it up?
Scarecrow - Not really sure how to pull this one off. I'm thinking costume shops should have SOME sort of scarecrow stuff for Halloween, and then just work on the mask from a sack or something. Hm.

THE PRESTIGE [20 Oct 2006|11:59am]
[ mood | cheerful ]

Watched this movie on Wednesday. Here are my comments, without spoilers of course.

I think it's probably the best film out this fall. Granted, you may have to take that with a grain of salt, considering my... shall we say, eccentricity. So take it for what it's worth =P

THE PRESTIGE is a dark movie, definitely NOT a chick flick (despite the presence of the Hollywood hunks who played Batman and Wolverine). Squeamish girls may not like it. I was quite impressed with Bale's performance, thought Jackman was OK and, I have to admit, found Johansson to be quite yummy (even though she only had a minor part). Barely recognised David Bowie, but he played a very interesting part.

My first and second choices to go see the movie with couldn't come through, so in the end I just went with a few friends. It turned out for the best, since it really wasn't a date movie (some parts were a little disturbing). Have a couple issues with the movie, so if you've seen it, I'd love to talk with you about it. The movie ended at midnight, so we didn't have the opportunity to do right after (which is when I prefer to do it).

Hollywood Stock Exchange has it at H$41.67, which means it's probably going to have an opening weekend box office of US$15 million, and it rates 67% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes' Critics Tomatometer.

The skinny:

Starring Christian Bale (Batman Begins), Hugh Jackman (X-Men: The Last Stand), Scarlett Johansson (The Island), two-time Oscar®-winner Michael Caine (Miss Congeniality), David Bowie (Labyrinth) and Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings).
Directed by Christopher Nolan (Memento, Batman Begins)

A mysterious story of two magicians whose intense rivalry leads them on a life-long battle for supremacy full of obsession, deceit and jealousy with dangerous and deadly consequences.

From the time that they first met as young magicians on the rise, Robert Angier (Jackman) and Alfred Borden (Bale) were competitors. However, their friendly competition evolves into a bitter rivalry making them fierce enemies-for-life and consequently jeopardizing the lives of everyone around them. Set against the backdrop of turn-of-the-century London, THE PRESTIGE is a dazzling period piece that never stops challenging the audience.

"Entertaining, spirited and shamelessly gimmicky, Christopher Nolan's film tells the intricate tale of two rival magicians practicing their art in late-Victorian London." - A.O. Scott, New York Times

[From Trailer: http://www.apple.com/trailers/touchstone/theprestige/]
Cutter: Every great magic trick consists of three acts. The first act is called "The Pledge"; The magician shows you something ordinary, but of course... it probably isn't. The second act is called "The Turn"; The magician makes his ordinary some thing do something extraordinary. Now if you're looking for the secret... you won't find it, that's why there's a third act called, "The Prestige"; this is the part with the twists and turns, where lives hang in the balance, and you see something shocking you've never seen before.

What would you do if your friend was surrounded by a mob of bloodthirsty triads? I'm not talking about a video game here, I'm talking about Real Life. 20 or so gangsters, chairs at the ready (no chopping knives, thank God), looking to take their payment out of your buddy's hide.

Psychology Today [09 Oct 2006|03:18pm]
[ mood | thoughtful ]
[ music | Gabrielle - Out of Reach ]

It probably started before the show, but X-Files seemed to be the catalyst for my generation's interest in psychology. Personally, I was never really that into the field, mostly because my father's a psychologist and I picked up a lot of psychology simply by sitting at the dining table (and being a lab rat). Didn't put a whole lot of stock into the armchair psychology that's so popular in magazines and talk shows.

I like to read, though. While I might not -like- or agree with everything I read, knowing about something always gives you an edge. I have Psychology Today as a personalized tab on Google and when I'm bored, I poke through it.

Bowling record: 190! [28 Sep 2006|10:24pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]

Set a new personal bowling record today. 190! I was simply on fire, my colleagues were trying to figure out what was up. Some of it is probably simply being fitter, some of it is probably channeling some of the stress out onto those poor pins.

I'll be moving to a new place over the next few days... it's MUCH more expensive, but it's bigger, nicer, and I'll be able to entertain guests. I'm hoping the change in environment will have a positive effect on me.

The black team is STAR, the white team is Phoenix. I'm wearing #4 (on the black team), marking the former four-time MVP and captain (also #4) of the opposing team. If you watch towards the end, you'll see me almost kill the presenter... it was an accident, I swear! =D

We lost by 4 points, but it was fun. Better luck next year.

Necklace and HSX [17 Jul 2006|04:50pm]
[ mood | curious ]

The fashion tip I've gotten for the summer is to wear a necklace that hangs out. A simple t-shirt isn't enough anymore.

I actually -have- a necklace, but it's a big ol' jade of a fat and jolly Buddha that really looks like a medal. It's not -bad-, but I want something better. I usually keep it tucked in since it's for protection.

So now I'm debating whether I should completely geek out and get the Batman™ Charm and Necklace or The One Ring™ - Sterling Edition. It seems a little too... mainstream, though. I wouldn't mind getting some of the Green Lantern stuff, but that looks way too fake/trashy.

[info]paranoidtj's suggested titanium jewelry.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I haven't seen Superman Returns yet, but I've heard that it's a chick flick. All the girls love it because Brandon Routh is SsOoOOo gorgeous. All the guys say that there's not enough action. Looking forward to Pirates of the Carribean 2 after hearing that it broke all these records and stuff, but I'm worried I'll have too high expectations. On the other hand, it has the beautiful Keira Knightley, so at least I'll go away with that.

The next movie I'm looking forward to is The Prestige.

"Ladies, ladies, please try to stay calm. This is a movie that has Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman in it. Please take precautions for spontaneous swooning if you decide to watch the trailer.
Basedon Christopher Priest's 1996 novel, Batman and Wolverine play rivalmagicians in turn-of-the-century London who battle each other for trade secrets. The rivalry is so intense that it even has some deadlyconsequences. Directed by Christopher Nolan (Memento, Batman Begins). Movie also features Michael Caine, David Bowie and (unfortunately) Scarlett Johansson.
"

My high school group is really big on gambling, and our next big pool is going to be on the Hollywood Stock Exchange. Hopefully, this time I'll win because I'm more of an insider on this industry than they are! Mwhahaha.

Gods & Heroes [17 Jul 2006|01:19am]
[ mood | chipper ]
[ music | Opening Theme 2 - [City Hunter] Go Go Heaven ]

I managed to avoid Ultimate Online and Everquest. But I couldn't fight the siren call of MMORPGs for long.

Oscar Wilde said it best: The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.

So first, it was Final Fantasy XI (because [info]missinformed got it for me). Spent a few months in it, the most entertainment I got out of -that- was [info]paranoidtj insisting on playing a Black Mage because OMG THEY'RE SO POWERFUL and getting pwned by low level mobs every 5 minutes.

Then it was City of Heroes, because I have a weakness for superheroes (uh... maybe that should be superheroines). Had -so- much fun there, but after a year, it got old. Not enough high level content, the beauty of playing 'Barbie' with superheroes got old because there wasn't that much new material. I probably wouldn't have left if it wasn't for a patch being incapable with my (old) graphics card. Sigh.

Somehow, I managed to dodge the City of Villains bullet even though I got into the beta. I was always working in the primetime in which you could actually play it.

Finally, the World of Warcraft. Again, spent about a year in it. I played the hell out of it when I was there, was going through a rough patch in life because of work, changing jobs, etc. Finally got out because it wasn't fun anymore and chewed up -way- too much time. Spending X amount of hours just to go through a dungeon for the -chance- to get a blue (rare) item? Insane. It's probably the biggest reason I put on a bit of weight.

I might venture back into the world again. The World of Warcraft expansion looks like it has my name on it. I must say, though, Gods & Heroes does too. You can't tell me that this doesn't look cool. Or am I the only one with a weakness for mythology (Greek/Roman, especially)?
